Spit and Sawdust pub stands the test of time

After serving drinks to south London regulars since 1856 and surviving two wartime bombs, the pub might well be expected to be a little worn around the edges. But step inside and you’ll discover a bright, airy, welcoming pub – the efforts of a painstaking renovation, which became something of a labour of love for a group of friends in 2016.

Since taking over Spit and Sawdust, Matt, Andy and Sean – aka ‘the motley crew’ – have brought the pub up to date and believe their beer selection is ‘the biggest in Elephant and Castle’; it has a strong focus on craft beer, many of which are sourced from local breweries. Their gin and whisky offerings are pretty impressive too, with 40 to choose from.

Alongside the beer, wine and spirits you’ll find a menu of comfort food in the form of (excruciating pun alert) Pie Minister pies. You can choose from pie and gravy (£7.50), pie, mash and gravy (£8.95) or pie, mash, peas and gravy (£10.45). There are also a range of street food pop-ups at the weekends for those looking to try something new.

Located on Bartholomew Street, just a short walk from Elephant Park, Spit and Sawdust is a familiar part of Elephant and Castle and an inviting place to catch up with friends.

Tuesday night is quiz night with ‘Big Money Prizes’ up for grabs and, for the really competitive, why not book a slot on the Shuffleboard table? On Friday nights, resident DJ Eloise and friends provides a soundtrack to start your weekend.

Spit and Sawdust also hosts a range of special events and, over the May Bank Holiday weekend (25 and 26 May) will be the venue for the Bermondsey Beer Festival 2019. With more than 50 beers being served alongside music and street food, it promises to be a fun weekend.
