Ark Globe Academy

Address: Harper Rd, London SE1 6AF

Ofsted rating: Good

Ark Globe Academy is a mixed all-through school located in Southwark, that holds the highest aspirations for its pupils. Executive Principal Matt Jones says that they are focussed as much on activities outside of the classroom as they are traditional learning, with the aim of preparing their pupils for university. In fact, last year 100% of Sixth Form students received a university offer, 73% of which were from a ‘top 3 university. Hence, in the Government’s last parliamentary review, the school was recognised as an example of good practice in education and appears in the nation’s top 10% of schools.

Those are the words of their mission statement, which goes on to emphasise not just the Christian principles of care and respect but also the development of the individual through academic achievement. St Thomas the Apostle School & Sixth Form

Winners of the UK Secondary School of the Year at the 2017 TES Awards, St Thomas the Apostle School is a Secondary School with an adjoining Sixth Form meaning it supports students from age 11 to 18. While they boast high marks from various academic awarding bodies, possibly even more impressive is the recognition the school’s pupils have achieved outside of the classroom. An Olivier Award, for example, was recently awarded to The Children’s Ensemble at Theatre Royal Stratford East in English National Opera’s Noye’s Fludde, in which two of the school’s students were soloists.

Harris Westminster Sixth Form

Address: Steel House, 11 Tothill St, London SW1H 9LH

Ofsted rating: Outstanding

One of the newest schools near Elephant Park on the list, the inception of Harris Westminster Sixth Form is a relatively unique tale. As reported by The Times, it’s a collaboration between Westminster School – a top performing Independent school – and the Harris Federation, a charity that runs close to 50 academies in London and the surrounding areas alone. They describe their approach as highly demanding, but learning inside what was formerly the Ministry of Justice building on Tothill Street in London’s zone 1 cannot be undervalued in their eyes, especially as many of their students go on to the best universities in the country.
