The team have now launched a weekly student evening, so we caught up with co-owner Joe Dowling to hear how the venue has been doing at Elephant Park since they opened last summer.

Tell us about Four Quarters and how it started.

Myself (Joe) and my colleague Tom opened a retro video game store in June 2012 called Retro Game Base. We eventually wanted to open a bar. We met our other partners through running RGB and managed to open our first Four Quarters on Peckham’s bustling Rye Lane in June 2014.

How is your venue different to other bars in the area?

We have one or two competitors, but we feel our brand and atmosphere is unique. There are quite a few gaming bars and arcades but few who combine the two like we do.

Tell us about the drinks and food at Four Quarters!

We combine local craft beer, fun cocktails and an extensive spirits offer with pizza (available in Hackney Wick) and burgers and dogs (available in Elephant Park). At Peckham we work with a local food operator.

How do your sustainability goals tie in with Elephant Park?

We’re keen recyclers!

What are your top three video/arcade games to play in Four Quarters?

Our favourites are Ridge Racer, Smash TV and Tron – if you haven’t played them yet, we challenge you to a high score!

How do visitors at Four Quarters get the coins to play?

You can purchase 4 US quarters for a quid (from the bar via debit or credit card) or you can bring your own. If you have quarters left over from your evening with us, you can bring these back on your next visit to use – or you could even slot them in with a gift for friends and family!

Give us 3 reasons why we should visit you at Four Quarters?!

Nostalgic fun, atmosphere and great drinks and service.

Why did you choose Elephant & Castle?

We’ve had an eye on Elephant & Castle for a few years, and watched Mercato Metropolitano get busier and busier, proving there was a demand in the area for nightlife. We wanted a more central location but couldn’t stretch to traditional central areas. With the potential to be part of a whole new Zone 1/2 neighbourhood, with such a catchment of potential customers and great transport links, it was a no-brainer!

Do you employ local people?

Yes, we do employ local people.

How would you describe Elephant & Castle?

A buzzy melting pot of different cultures, from South America, Africa, Europe and beyond, with great transport links and now an excellent leisure and hospitality offer.

How would you sum up Elephant & Castle in three words?

Buses, buzzy and multicultural.

What is your favourite thing about this part of London?

I live in Camberwell which, like most of Southeast London, has loads of green space. Elephant & Castle, like all central areas, has so much history and amazing buildings so it’s great to come over to this spot and immerse yourself in it.

What do you think of Elephant Park?

It’s done a great job of providing for the myriad of local cultures and strengthening the local offer. The design of the buildings is excellent from an aesthetic perspective, and Sayer Street is a great addition to the area. Ash Avenue will be even more amazing once finished.

How helpful were the Elephant Park team in helping you get set up?

The team were lovely in the process to get opened. It required a lot of hard work, time and management like opening any new venue, but we got there in the end. Since opening, it has been great, and everyone has been easy to work with!

If you want to book a table at Four Quarters, you can do so by visiting their website. Their new student night has now launched and is held every Wednesday evening, offering £4.50 house drinks and £8 cocktails. You can also get 10% off food every day when you show your student ID.
