Are you getting ready to run the London Marathon on Sunday 28 April? If so, check out our training routes in and around Southwark.

If solo running isn’t for you, or you’re struggling to find much-needed motivation, take a look at the options below– both short and long– to get your training back on track.

The warm-up event

Before diving into the 26.2-mile marathon, why not give Southwark Park’s 10k fun run a go? Taking place on Saturday 11 May at 9.30am, the 6.2-mile run involves three laps of a scenic course set out within the park. Run for fun or go for a personal-best time at this race, because all runners are chip timed. The entry fee is £18 and the closing date for registration is Friday 10 May. There will be prizes for the first, second and third runners home in the male and female categories, plus age category (40+, 50+ and 60+) prizes and a medal for all finishers.

Find out more or register here.

More than just a run

Good Gym is an organisation that literally runs to the aid of people and projects in Southwark. Every Wednesday at 6.45pm, the group members meet at the Old Spike Roastery and run to a chosen community project. Once there, they help with tasks such as lifting, digging or clearing before running back to the start point, stopping for a quick fitness session on the way.

Recent projects have included stocking shelves at local food banks, planting trees in a public park, and shifting earth for a community gardening project. To date, Good Gym has completed 3,995 good deeds for the community.

If this is something you would like to support, find out more here.

Grab a buddy

If you would prefer to be part of a smaller group, we have the perfect solution. Grab a friend and – with the promise of coffee and a cake (at the end!) – do a 9.8-mile running tour of Southwark. This route begins at Oxo Tower Wharf and follows the Thames Path on the South Bank. You’ll run past Tower Bridge and through Dickensian alleyways, leaving the river at the King’s Stairs Gardens to arrive in Southwark Park. From here you’ll move into Burgess Park, then Kennington Park and, finally, past The Oval towards Vauxhall Bridge. We promise it’s nearly over from here, as you’ll see the Oxo Tower, which marks the end of your exertions.

Full route details can be found here.
