Elephant Park Elmer Trail returns for World Book Day

Say Elmer the Patchwork Elephant, and most people can picture the colourful character. The award-winning series of children’s books, written by David McKee, have become known as champions of diversity and inclusivity. Through reading the books, Elmer helps children to celebrate uniqueness and embrace differences – while taking them through a range of wonderful adventures!

World Book Day is on 3rd March 2022, a national celebration of reading and all the wonderful stories to be enjoyed, by those young and old. 

To celebrate World Book Day (and all things Elephant!), we’ve brought back the much-loved Elmer Trail London also known as Elmer At The Elephant, a colourful sculpture trail of community-designed elephant statues! 

Follow the Elmers round the trail; each one has been designed and painted by a local artist and community group, including primary school classes, pensioners, youth groups and local residents.

The start of the trail is only a five-minute walk from Elephant and Castle Station and is free for all to enjoy. You can download the Elmer at the Elephant map for the trail here or pick up a copy at the Elephant Park Marketing Suite, the Southwark Heritage Centre or Walworth Library – which is also the start of the trail. 

There are ten gloriously colourful and patterned elephants to be found across the Elmer Trail London as it leads you through some of the area’s local hotspots, like the two-acre park, and our natural play area Elephant Springs.
